Child Safety Kid Safety
December 2020 25th Year Anniversary
Protecting your children is on the top of every parents and grandparents list. The very essence of a mother’s protection is ever present throughout the animal, aquatic and human kingdoms.
There are many items that a child can carry to protect themselves. I have been selling protection products since December 1995.
Pre Covid-19 Pandemic, due to bussing cuts, many children had no choice but to walk to school. Some walk through darken streets, alleys, in busy streets due to lack of sidewalks.
Even with Virtual Learning children are still not completely safe. Predators hack into home cameras, home assistive devices like Alexa, tablets, phones, desktops, laptops and physically into your home. They will do the surveillance to know when children are home alone, and adults are away. If parents and guardians do not do their due diligence to do their own surveillance, their guard is down. Please talk to your children. Have a plan of action for every instance that may arise.

Child Safety As Simple As A Whistle
Years back I became aware of a young girl being kidnapped on her way to school in NE Indiana. After a few days her body was discovered in Central Indiana. She was sexually assaulted and murdered. I questioned why this happened. I questioned how this could happen on the way to school when other children and adults are out in full force.
This crime happened before budget cuts eliminated busing which puts more children at risk for abduction. Walking to school should be safe every day. These budget cuts that make children more vulnerable to predators should be rectified. These cuts should not have been allowed. I happen to live in a state in which the previous governor has used his authority to make deep cuts in the education process just because the elected State Superintendent received more votes than he did. This is shameful.
I could not help but wonder how something like this could have been avoided. Children need a way to call attention to situations that put them at risk. The young girl was known to one of the abductors. It is likely that at least one of the abductors were known to her. I am not convinced the girl accepted a ride.
In a matter of days local authorities approached a suspect. The man authorities approached would not allow them in his residence. The authorities returned with a search warrant. What they found was not easy to comprehend. The suspect’s wife and three children were found in their residence, murdered. The suspect was formally arrested and jailed.
The abducted girl lived in close proximity to the suspect. It was published that one of the suspect’s daughters was in the same class as the abducted girl and that they were friends.
I had three daughters of my own. I constantly stressed the importance of safety. Their rebuttal was that we lived in a small city and those things didn’t happen here. Our city is 20 miles from the street this occurred on. I was still pondering why this happened and why I felt the need to understand and provide a means to keep this from happening again.
I then remembered a time when my oldest daughter told me that a school mate also a girl had confided to her that sexual abuse was going on in their home. This was in the latter 1980’s. My response was wow, what prompted her to tell you? I learned the class had a segment on good touch and bad touch. My daughter was in tears because she felt so sorry for the girl in her class. Discussing why it was important to let some one in a position of authority know, my X walked in and demanded that the conversation go no further and that we were not allowed to tell anyone.
I started paying attention to the girl and other family members when I had the chance to do so. To this day I can still visualize the mother’s facial expressions and her body language as she sat through morning mass in the back of the church. Her cheeks were red and swollen from crying. The stress, despair and unhappiness were oozing out around her. Her demeanor was that of an abused canine. During a birthday party at Mc Donald’s I noticed an older brother around the age of 11 in the portable play pen slithering on his belly like a snake around the toddler. I also noticed strange behavior from another sibling. When the older brother was in high school, he was arrested for sexual misconduct with a minor. I never did see the father’s name in our paper for similar charges.
It occurred to me that a similar program may have been provided to the class of the abducted girl and the suspect’s daughter. I do not know what really happened. I have a strong feeling that the daughter confided to the friend and possibly her mother. The suspect found out and started eliminating everyone that could be a threat.
I was a vendor at a Farmer’s Market in the city where the crimes occurred for a couple years. A gentleman stopped by my area and asked about the personal protection products I had on display. I explained them and commented why I thought children should carry a shrill alarm or whistle to ward off predators that prey on children. The gentleman mentioned the abducted girl by name. I acknowledged that was the incident I was referring to. He told me he was the detective in charge of that case. I told him what I thought the reasons were that led to the outcome. I told him I did not believe the girl accepted a ride. He let me know they did know each other. He questioned if anyone would have realized what was happening even with a loud audible device. That is a question that will never be answered.
The suspect later hung himself in jail before the trial.

There are varied opinions on keeping your children safe. If you have ever experienced the terror of noticing that your child is no longer in site in a busy public setting there are now electronic child leashes that can easily be obtained. The child wears a transmitter that sends a constant signal to the receiver that is held by the adult. The signal is adjustable form 6 to 30 feet. There are flashing LED multi colored shapes that can be attached to clothing shoes, backpacks that are waterproof and visible up to 1/2 mile. These can also be attached to your pets collar. For more durability there are multi function LED flashers that are perfect for joggers and bikers.

What can children do to protect themselves? You must 18 to purchase and possess a stun gun or taser. Repellent sprays for animals, pepper sprays and mace are not allowed on school premises or buses. Cellular phones can be used for safety. Cell phones are not allowed in schools. I do believe that shrill audible alarms and whistles should be permissible for children to carry to and from any activity whether or not they are constantly supervised by parents, guardians, caregivers or school personnel. I do think that it would be most appropriate for schools to allow students to place their alarms or whistles in a place during school that would not interfere with the classroom atmosphere. Our regulations as a society are geared toward allowing adults to protect themselves while children are not allowed these same privileges for obvious reasons. As a caring and educated society we should be finding ways that allow children to protect themselves. Parents, teachers, caregivers and guardians cannot always be present to protect every child.
Sad but True
Close to Christmas a few years ago, the NE Indiana news was horrible. A young girl was abducted on her way to the school bus. Within a couple of days her neighbors and friend of the family, mother dead and 3 daughters dead, one of whom was a friend to the abducted girl. Sitting on the porch unharmed was the husband and father of the found victims. The father/husband was responsible for the death of his wife, 3 daughters, the abduction and death of the missing neighbor girl. A shrill Audible Alarm would have alerted neighbors who may have obtained a description of the abductor and vehicle, and possibly scared off the abductor. This story could have been no abduction, no deaths, and five lives saved from a simple shrill alarm.
In your home
There should be a plan and a rehearsed process for what to do in certain situations. Don't open the door unless you know and are allowed to permit this person into your home. Install a peephole in exterior doors. If you're outside make noise and scream. Install deadbolt locks or similar locks. If you rent there are Door Jammers, window alarms, and audible alarms available that are portable and very effective. For infants there are electrical outlet plugs, cabinet latches, doorknob guards and corner cushions. The infant protections can be taken with you anywhere you go. Every one should be encouraged to report any inappropriate behavior to someone that can help. It is also important to instill the differences between what is inappropriate and what is acceptable. Even with cultural differences there is common ground of what is right and what is wrong.
Home Alone? Another method of protecting children and even females and the elderly from becoming vulnerable to "Fishing telephone calls" is through a voice changer. A child or female can make themselves sound like a Gruff Man. There are many variations of voice alterations. This will deter someone who is checking to see if a female, elderly citizen or children are home alone. A Telespy Intruder Alert can detect entry to set areas in a home of office. Someone tells you they were not near the area, the TeleSpy will prove different.

October 2014 Classic Car Show
October of 2014, I had the opportunity to set up as a vendor during a two-day fundraising classic vehicle show. I love the people I meet. Through our conversations I learn about their area, interests, community plus a wide host of valuable information.
I met a lady, her daughter and grandchild in a stroller. While looking at personal protection products the older woman commented that the women of her city needed protection products to protect themselves against a local rapist.
I leaned toward her with great interest. I asked her how long the rapist was active and how many instances were documented. She told me her minister announced it at church that Sunday just before she came to the event. Her minister wanted his congregation to be aware that there were five or more rapes in the recent past in their area. I asked her what the local news has provided. She answered that none of the instances were in their newspapers or on any other news over the airways.
The general public has a need to know, specifically if the attacks are against only women, girls, both, or boys and men also. Remember the scout motto: “Always be prepared”. If the public does not know what they need to be prepared for, they will not be prepared. With today’s electronic news, social media sites, and information at your fingertips not as many subscribe to newspapers as they did in the past. Radio news and Television news requires that you be a regular listener to get the news they want you to hear.
I live in a small town and still subscribe to our local paper plus a weekend paper from the second largest metropolitan area in the state I reside in. The county and city where the clergy announced the rapist to the congregation is the same distance to the metropolitan area as the county that I live in. Nothing has been published where I live or in the large metropolitan area paper. With that being stated, I am hopeful by sharing valuable information through my social media, and article writing media channels, the public will be informed about a rapist in NE Indiana.
I do not know if the rapist operated just in the city or county that I visited, or if the geographic area spans across a few counties and cities. I believe that more than two rapes in a defined area which the rapist uses the same methods of operation, the attacks define a serial rapist in operation.
I understand that the Public Relations of a community not wanting to publicly announce there is a serial rapist in their midst. I also understand why policing agencies may want to suppress the crimes committed in their jurisdiction. However, I know that helping communities and alerting them to potential dangers out weigh the ramifications of suppressing information. I know also that the general public will not be prepared to protect themselves unless they know what the threat to them is.
I am not suggesting that every citizen needs a hand gun permit. I do believe that knowledge of a potential threat will produce ways and means to better protect themselves, their residences and their behavior patterns of daily routes, parking and heightened awareness to situations around them.
A True Life Example
My daughter was working in a mall that has since been torn down. New stores have been built where the mall was. Around the 1999 to 2000 year time frame she went on break from a national retailer where she worked. She was approached by a couple of men and a woman selling perfumes. When asked if she was interested, she replied no, because of allergies. She was sprayed, fell to the floor and was crawling and attempting to get away from them, she could not get up. A recruitment officer from one of the US military branches was coming back into the mall from his supper break. He went to where my daughter was laying (the “sales people”) immediately dispersed. He picked her up and carried her to his recruitment office. He notified the store where she worked. A couple of the male employees said the perfume sales people were in their store but they had no reaction to the perfume. My daughter was 17 years old at the time. No one called me or made a call to the police.
A coworker of mine told me he was friends with the bar owners just outside the store where my daughter worked and offered to ask questions. The bar owners had the perfume sales people on surveillance in their bar and a clear view of their van in the parking lot including the license plate number. The license plate was from Illinois. I spoke to the bar manager. The bar manager informed me he could not share the video with me but if I made a police report, he could share the information with the police. I did make a police report. A detective went to the bar and viewed the sales people and their van. The detective called me back and told me that since the sales people did not physically assault my daughter they would not arrest them.
There were reports over social media with the same sales people operating in other cities in Indiana and Ohio. Close to six months after my daughter’s incident, a policing agency in Ohio arrested them. They had been using the rouse to subdue and abduct attractive young females.
If every city with similar incidents were shared through their state and bordering states, and provided public notice to be on the look out, or beware of alerts, the perpetrators could have been apprehended much sooner and saved the abduction of many young females.
This is one of the reasons I offer personal protection products. This is also why it should not be illegal or restricted to carry pepper spray or stun devices.
If you have read this entire article, you probably have a good understanding of why I believe a rapist operating in any area needs to be shared with the public through all news avenues.
If this article helps one person avoid being assaulted it is worth sharing. A hint for those of you that need more information, if you scan through my face book page and one of my web sites https://Safe-Practice.com, you will find the classic vehicle event and city where the rapist actions were shared with the congregation by their minister.
